Useful Oracle Financials Resources

I am often asked what book to read to learn Oracle Financials, there is no one complete answer, it is so huge an area it is best to start with overviews and dig into details as needed/time available. If you get the concepts right everything else will drop into place much more easily than getting overwhelmed with specific details of how to use every single feature.

Oracle Documentation Set

The first place to start should be the collateral provided by development, there are two new guides introduced for R12 which I think are very good.

Oracle Financials Concepts Guide, Release 12 (Part No. B28873-01)

This is a great guide as it discusses business, acounting and finance concepts and how they map to the Oracle Financials world. I always reccomend that you start with this so you get an overview of the business problems the Financial suite is trying to solve.

Oracle Financials and Oracle Procurement Functional Upgrade Guide: Release 11i to Release 12 (Part No. B31543-01)

Note – This a new type of upgrade guide which discusses functional issues for business users, not to be confused with the technically oriented other upgrade guide. It discusses how existing set up will be upgraded and should be helpful as you plan the impacts to your business and also consider what new features you want to take advantage of in R12.

UPDATE (2/13/2004):

Check out this more comprehensive review of Oracle Financials books with reviews.

There are a couple of good books available that you might want to check out.

Oracle E-Business Suite Financials Handbook, Third Edition

I have the first edition of this book, it is very readable and goes over the concepts and major features. Not sure what will be in the 3rd Edition which is due out mid January, but I assume it will cover R12.

Oracle E-Business Suite 11i; Implementing Core Financial Applications

susan foster book

There is a book available on google books by Susan Foster that is a few years old now but much of the information is still relevant.

Oracle Technology Network Forums

The financials forum on OTN are packed with useful information and there’s a very active community there so questions get answered pretty quickly.

You should also check out the blogs on the blogroll, there’s a wealth of tips and tricks and detailed information out there. You might also want to subscribe to this blog.

Author: David Haimes

I'm Senior Director in the Oracle Research and Development Organization, with close to 20 years working in various roles on the development of the Financial Management product suite.  Since the summer of 2016 my focus is exclusively on working with customers and longer-term design work, particularly around next-generation functional and technical architecture. My task is to figure out NOW what the financial management system of the next 3, 5 or more years should look like and start working toward it.  At the moment the majority of my time is spent working on Blockchain or Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLT), leading the effort for all of SaaS applications.  I'm also interested in AI, Machine Learning and new UX and interaction paradigms such as chat bots. I started out in Oracle UK and found my way out to Oracle's Redwood Shores, California HQ in May 2000.  My previous role was product owner for Fusion Accounting Hub, General Ledger, Intercompany and Legal Entity products in Oracle Fusion Financials and eBusiness Suite General Ledger. I have also worked on EMEA Globalizations, Federal and Public Sector Financials, XML Payments and a variety of projects on other products down the years.
